The Old Palace Afternoon Tea

'Set in mature gardens with spectacular views of the city, this fine example of Victorian and Georgian architecture was once Palace to the Bishops of Lincoln and its foundations date from medieval times. Situated right next to the magnificent cathedral in the heart of Lincoln's historic quarter...'

Many times I have come up to Lincoln and wanted to really explore the medieval ruins and architecture but, for different reasons, haven't really had the chance. However, last week I got the opportunity to take afternoon tea in the Old Bishops Palace right in the heart of the city. I went along with my mother-in-law and a good friend, Sarah. We were whisked into a large drawing room overlooking the city where we were guided to our seats. This room, large as it was, would only cater to about five groups at any given time so the sense of intimacy made for a really calming and enjoyable time to ourselves.
We selected our gin and tonics to start whilst taking in our surroundings and chattering away to each other. Next came our selections of tea: we had been presented with an ornate wooden box earlier which housed the various tea infusions on offer- my favourite was definitely the mint variation which smelled amazing! However, I settled on my standard 'go-to' of English Breakfast tea which arrived in a very sweet glass teapot.

Shortly after our teapots arrived, the most beautiful cake stands filled with finger sandwiches and mini cakes were presented to our table. They looked so beautiful, we didn't know where to start! I loved the combination of flavours and fillings; they were balanced beautifully to make a creative and yet substantial afternoon tea. Whilst each cake and sandwich were deceivingly small, we really had a job on our hands to manage finishing everything.
A little while after our cakes arrived we were presented with hot scones, fresh from the oven and they were so lovely and decadent too. (Yes, I ate every last crumb!)

After filling our bellies to the brim with tea and cake
we sat back in our armchairs and relaxed into a typically deep conversation that us ladies cant help ourselves with whenever we get together! I loved that we didn't feel rushed out of the place once we had finished eating. Instead, we were able to take our time and we probably spent a good hour and a half just chilling out together.

I couldn't help but think what a great way to celebrate somebody special in your life. For a very civilised and sophisticated occasion, be it for a birthday or bride to be, The Bishop's Palace is a beautiful venue to make memories with loved ones.
As we were leaving we paused to take in the glorious medieval ruins around the Palace. I felt catapulted back in time as I wondered about the stories and secrets those walls could tell! It really adds to the event when you are standing in surroundings that are steeped in history, as if you're sharing your moment with the many people who have stood there centuries ago.

The Bishops Palace is also a hotel and venue for occasions. It will host weddings, conferences and meetings and, being in such a desirable location, is the perfect little getaway spot to stay at if you fancy taking a weekend out to just explore everything historic Lincoln has to offer.
